With the rapidly growing population in Webster County, the risk of water contamination by human waste is greatly increasing. The average home discharges an estimated 360 gallons of sewage effluent each day. When multiplied by the 250 average new systems installed each year in Webster County, the estimated additional amount of sewage effluent being discharged into our soil for absorption and evaporation increases by approximately 32,850,000 gallons annually. Since 1996, all on-site sewage systems are required to be installed by Webster County certified installers or by the residing homeowner. In addition, a permit is required for any commercial property, single-dwelling on less than three acres, or mulitple homes on more than 3 acres. Residential permits can be acquired for $90 and commercial permits for $120 by visiting the Webster County Health Unit at 233 E. Washington in Marshfield. Environmental staff at the Webster County Health Unit are responsible for ensuring that reported systems meet requirements for depth and setback distance from wells, waterways and property lines to decrease the potential of contamination of the water resources. Furthermore, the environmental staff pursues illegal system installers and investigates failing systems. To report possible illegal installations, violators, or failing systems please call (417) 859-6963. A list of certified installers is available at the Health Unit. You may also email your request and your mailing address to davist1@lpha.mopublic.org and a list of certified installers or an official complaint form will be mailed to you. |
